Refreshing Hikes Around Arona

Arona may be small but it has very pretty streets that are quite enticing for short strolls. Although it is a 17th century town, it is an excellent base for a 4 hour hike to the challenging 1000 meter summit of Rogue del Conde, which has a flat top for some refreshing views over La Gomera and south Tenerife.

The steep and loose hiking path goes along an open route to Conde for most of the way, then to an old road that leads to the hill’s plateau. The trail starts from the town church road that goes upward and across the main street until you come to an obscure road; this curvy road straightens after a while towards the mountain before reaching the statue of Jesus. From here, there will be distinct trail markers for the desired route which crosses a gorge. Heading left on the hill, the path grows steeper until the summit.

Transport and Food

There is a public bus that runs frequently every day and takes you between Arona and Los Cristianos and takes only 45 minutes. Tapas bars abound in Arona but there are also plenty of restaurants for a delectable meal such as the El Patio Canario restaurant, which is operated by a Belgian-Canario family. This restaurant serves delicious Belgian and Canary culinary cuisine at reasonable prices.

Further away, off the Arona-Vilaflor road, is a rustic restaurant, the Refugio, which offers tasty homemade food with a fantastic view from its patio although its prices are a bit steep. It also offers board and breakfast operated by paragliders and hikers who are more than happy to advise on trails and hiking conditions.
